TEASER TRAILER EXAMPLES

Teaser Trailer -

  • Used in high budget films
  • creates sense of mystery in audience
  • lack of footage from the film
  • leaves audience wanting more
  • lack of narrative
  • lasts for about a minute
  • may only focus on one aspects , scene or location from the film

Examples-

1. Avatar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsnMbDdhCe8
Genre : Action
Compared to the theatrical trailer this teaser is one minute shorter, but overall is 2:21 minutes long , which over the time of an average trailer.  However as the trailer progresses the lack of dialogue and use of one soundtrack make it apparent that this can be classed as a teaser trailer. Also the fact that the trailer focuses on the opening part of the movie, and focusing on  for the first minute and twenty seconds , meaning that overall there is a significant lack of plot line, leaving the audience wanting to see more.

Genre : Action/Thriller
The skyfall teaser consists of a footage taken from the film not in plot order, however the scenes taken and put into the trailer are of a short duration, creating a quicker pace. The first half of the trailer has a voice over but this then stops at point 0:38 , leading the audience to be focused on the tense music which continuously builds through the rest of the piece. This build of music hints to the viewer about the genre and theme, without revealing too much plot which is why this trailer can be seen to be a teaser.

Genre : Spy
This trailer is a clear example of a teaser trailer, as firstly it is only 0:35 seconds long, along with no voice over. More over the use of a montage of shots creates a quick pace throughout the trailer, implying that the genre of the film is action, as well as there being the words 'Spy' and 'Movie' written within the trailer. This montage also shows how it is a teaser trailer as conveys a lack of narrative to the audience but rather hints to the audience about the main parts of the film. Due to this film also being a seqeule, many viewers will already know what the film may be about , meaning that they will attract a large audience by giving less away.

Genre : Romantic Comedy
The teaser trailer for 'Love Rosie' focuses on one scene of the whole film, which demonstrates how it is a comedy by the awkward situations and upbeat music, as well as the highlighted areas of silence which emphasis the dialogue. Also this is one of the key scenes from the movie , hinting to the audience what the rest of the film is about , with also maintaining a lack of narrative. Finally from the one minute duration of this film it is clear to see it is a teaser trailer.

5.  Beauty and the Beast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c38r-SAnTWM
Genre : Musical
This teaser mainly focuses on just one location taken from the film, which demonstrates how this can be seen as a teaser. Moreover with this trailer I feel that they have twisted the apparent genre of the film, as this is a film from the well known children's tail of beauty and the beast. By doing this they have attracted a larger audience , as the film can appear as more of a horror film, from the initial opening music and darker lighting, as well as the suspense created throughout due to the lack of narrative.

Genre : Science fiction
This most recent star wars trailer can be argued to be a theatrical because of the voice over, however I feel that this is a teaser trailer, because of the lack of narrative shown throughout, as from the audiences perspective there is no link between each of the shots taken from the different scenes shown. However by looking at the length of the trailer I feel that it can be seen to be a teaser trailer as it isn't long enough to be a theatrical trailer. Again because Star Wars is a well known film , it would be important to not give too much away to the audience,  but still keep them interest.

Genre : Family Adventure
Much like the Beauty and the Beast Disney has again recreated a classic children's tail and twisted the apparent genre in the trailer, attracting a larger variety of audiences, as many would associate this to be a children's film. For example the dark colour pallet , tense music and high speed action tells the audience that this is something more than a children's film. Moreover throughout the trailer there is a significant lack of narrative, as the shots shown in the trailer were not in chronological order and even though there was a voice over it is not descriptive of what is happening in the film.

Genre : Action/ Comedy
The 'Dead Pool 2' trailer is a lot longer than the rest of the trailers, lasting 3:45 minutes long, but due too the showing of one scene it can be argued that this a teaser trailer. Not only this but over 1 minute if the trailer is the same shot of the main character in the phone booth. Overall the this trailer give narrative for the scene that it is showing but overall gives no evidence of what else is going to be happening in the film. Moreover as this film has not even been released yet it is not certain to say that this footage is used in the final product.

9. Guardians of the Galaxyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Uwp2K5AO3Y
Genre : Fantasy/Comedy
At the beginning of this trailer it can be seen to be a theatrical trailer because of the narrative shown, however this isnt taken any further as there is no continuous narrative due to the montage of shots. Moreover there is no voice over giving any direction  to the viewer, however dialogue is re-introduced at 0:47 were it is shown to the audience that this film is also a comedy, as further enhanced by the music that then shortly follows.

10. Up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE_V0g9q4g0
Genre : Adventure
This trailer is most defiantly a teaser, due to the complete significant lack of  narrative and the focus on one scene. This teaser can be seen to establish the main concept of the film amongst the audience, however there is no indication of what else is to happen in the movie. Furthermore it can be argued that this teaser trailer was made before the actual film, due to the lack of footage shown, as well as the overall lack of voice over and dialogue as the only word said throughout was 'Good Afternoon'.
